"Some of the Finest Paintings Ever in America"Date: May 5, 2016 Date End: May 4, 2016 Location: the James Brice House Time: 6:30 pm-8:30 pm In the mid-1790s an extraordinary collection of 63 Old Master paintings was brought to Maryland by the Stier family, Flemish aristocrats fleeing political turmoil in Europe. The art collection, which included major works by Rubens, Van Dyck, and Brueghel, followed the Stiers to the William Paca House--which they rented for a brief period--before arriving at their developing plantation, Riversdale, in Prince George’s County. Susan Pearl will discuss the 20-year process of tracking down and researching these works with the assistance of Curator, Arthur Wheelock, at the National Gallery of Art.
