Historic Annapolis (HA) invites you to their Annual Plant Sale at the William Paca Garden, this Mother’s Day weekend, Saturday and Sunday, May 10 – 11. The event will be held rain or shine, and HA members can enjoy early admission on Saturday.
Newly certified as a Maryland’s Best Native Plants retailer, HA is proud to be recognized by the Maryland Department of Agriculture as a retailer offering at least 20 percent of its plants that are native to our state. If you are keen to support bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, and other native wildlife in your garden, you will find plants that delight them here.
Look for fragrant Bee Balm, Wild Bergamot, and Hoary Mountain Mint. The pollinators will love them, but the deer will turn up their noses. Welcome Spring with a sunny yellow theme, by taking home some Golden Alexander and Golden Ragwort, and carry on into Summer with charming Sundrops, all Maryland natives. Pollinators will covet your Virginia Sweetspire shrub and Eastern Redbud tree, both rich in nectar.
Take home a piece of history by buying Orris Root, Columbine, Balloon Flower, Naked Lady, and Hellebore, all harvested from the Paca Garden. The head-turning Byzantine Gladiolus in the Garden Flower Parterre is on offer for the first time this year. Veggies and herbs in abundance will inspire gourmets.
Children will have their interest sparked by several flowers, including the Silver Money Plant’s springtime purple blossoms that become pods resembling coins. In earlier times, they were thought to keep away monsters! The Sensitive Plant entertains as it folds its leaves to their touch, or squeeze the neck of the Snapdragon and the dragon’s mouth will open and close.
Sale hours are 10 am to 4 pm on Saturday, May 10, and noon to 4 pm on Sunday, May 11.
HA members may enter early at 9:30 am on Saturday only. Join now
Entry is at 1 Martin St. in downtown Annapolis.
Garden volunteers will be on hand to answer questions and offer advice.
The catalog can be downloaded without charge at www.annapolis.org beginning May 1.
Printed catalogs ($5.00) will be available at the Museum of Historic Annapolis (99 Main St.), at the William Paca House beginning May 1, and at the Plant Sale May 10 and May 11.
