Virtual Lecture - Planting an Empire

Planting an Empire is the only modern, comprehensive history of the Chesapeake colonies, but writing it wasn’t a simple task. While two colonies shared a geographic region, they differed in a number of fundamental ways, yet together they formed a prosperous and politically important region in British North America. Trying to balance two dissimilar narratives proved to be a challenge. A cautionary tale for would-be authors!

About our Presenter: Jean Russo received her Ph.D. from The Johns Hopkins University with a specialization in American colonial history. She is a consulting historian for Historic Annapolis and an employee of the Maryland State Archives. Her published work includes essay author and co-editor of Colonial Chesapeake Society. She and Mark B. Letzer edited the diary of William Faris, Annapolis clockmaker & gardener, published by the Maryland Historical Society in 2003. She wrote Planting an Empire: The Early Chesapeake in British North America, a history of the colonial Chesapeake region, with her daughter, also an historian, for Johns Hopkins University Press (2012). For Maryland: A History (also JHUP, 2018), she wrote the first chapter and co-edited the volume.
